John E. Rishel was born near Hamilton, Clinton County, Indiana on March 22, 1845. He enlisted in Co. C of the 10th Indiana Volunteer Regiment, which was made up of men from Clinton County. He was discharged at Vicksburg on January 24, 1865. Following the war he operated grist mills at Burlington and Battle Ground. At times he worked as a painter and contractor. He moved to Lafayette in 1890. He was commander of the Logan-Taylor Post of GAR at Lafayette. 

He married Juliette Seaward on Feb. 4, 1869. She died in 1926. He died on March 4, 1940 at his home in Lafayette. He was 95 years of age. He was survived by 4 daughters, 1 son, 26 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. He is buried at Spring Vale Cemetery.
