A Short History of Company D, 27th Indiana Infantry, Sons of Veterans Reserve

Lance Stevens organized the Company in the summer of 2002 and became its first commander as a 1st Sergeant. In 2003 Lance was promoted from 1st Sergeant to 2nd Lieutenant and the Company had grown from nine to twenty-one enlisted men. Lance was promoted to 1st Lieutenant the following year. In 2004 1st Lieutenant Larry Elbert received command of the Company supported by 2nd Lieutenant Terry Reid. In 2005 the Company commissioned and purchased its National Colors. In 2006 Alan Teller was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. In 2009 1st Lieutenant Alan Teller took command of the Company, supported by 2nd Lieutenant Bruce Kolb. Also in 2009, the Company commissioned its Regimental Colors. As of December 2018, the 27th Indiana is 68 members strong.

In the last ten years the 27th has carried and displayed its National Colors in many events inside and outside the state of Indiana. They have been a source of pride for the Company.

Thrailkill Cemetery Monument Rededication on July 12th at 10:00 AM EDT. The cemetery is located 3-4 miles north of Swayzee on State Road IN 13 (Address: 441 N 800 W 27, Converse, Indiana). Contact Cpl. Randy McNally or Lt. Bill Adams

August 30, 2025 – Last Union Veteran of Jasper County
Ceremony for the Last Union Veteran of Jasper County. Being jointly planned by David D. Porter Camp 116 and John Auten Camp 8 Starting time is 11:00 AM CDT at Rensselaer, Indiana at the Weston Cemetery in the town of Rensselaer. Pvt. George L. Morgan a Pvt. in Co A of the 87th Indiana will be recognized. Contact is Lt. Bill Adams

September 20, 2025 – 19th Illinois Train Wreck Monument Dedication
19th Illinois Train Wreck Monument Dedication (Address: 220 Capital Ave, Shoals Indiana 47581) on the grounds of the Martin County Museum, 2:00 PM EDT. Contact is Captain Mike Beck.

October 18, 2025 – Last Union Veteran of Pike County
Ceremony for the Last Union Veteran of Pike County at Walnut Hills Cemetery, Petersburg, Indiana, 12:00 PM CDT. Winfield Scott Hunter 1848-1947 was the last Union veteran buried in Pike County, Indiana. He was in Company L, 13th Indiana Cavalry. Contact is Foster Camp No. 2 Camp Commander David Hoesli.
